El Jefe Meats
LiveFrom a website that couldn't take an order to one that runs the shop.
The situation
Where it started
El Jefe Meats is a butchery and Latin American BBQ shop in Mount Maunganui. Brilliant food, loyal regulars, and a website that couldn't take a single order.
What they had was borrowed — a system and a separate online store, both belonging to somebody else. Changing a price meant asking someone. Every order, every catering enquiry and every stock update was manual work for the owner. The website was a brochure, and not one he controlled.
The strategy call
What we uncovered
The real bottleneck was ownership. The shop was running on someone else's system and someone else's online store, so every price change, every menu update and every new photo depended on another company's timeline.
That made it an operations problem, not a website problem — a smarter-looking brochure site would have changed nothing. The fix had to run the whole way through: from the customer's first click to the ticket printing in the kitchen, with the owner holding the keys to all of it.
So we built them their own.
The solution
What we built
- A landing page built on real photos of the shop, the food and the people, with one clear place to go next. That page had to earn the rest.
- A full online menu — every burger, side and add-on, with prices that are actually current, because the owner controls them now rather than a support ticket.
- Online ordering with card payments: customers pick their food, choose a pickup time from the slots the shop is genuinely open for, pay by card, and get a confirmation email straight away.
- Their own database behind all of it. The menu, the prices, the photos, the "sold out" labels — the owner logs in, changes something, and it is live on the website seconds later. No developer, no support ticket, no waiting until Monday.
- A butchery section that respects how the shop actually works. Every bag is cut by hand, so the site quotes an estimate, the shop confirms the real price by phone, and the customer pays at the counter. Nothing from the butchery is ever charged online.
- Catering enquiries that answer themselves — a written estimate by email within about a minute, covering package, guest numbers and service fee. The shop gets its own copy at the same time, with the customer's details ready to reply to. That used to be an evening of typing.
- Orders that actually reach the kitchen: a paid order rings a bell on the shop's screen and prints a ticket on the kitchen printer by itself. If nobody accepts it within a few minutes, the system emails the shop to chase it, so an order can't quietly sit there unnoticed.
- Email that sends from their domain, not ours, with the records set up properly so confirmations and alerts land in the inbox instead of the spam folder.
- Their domain moved across, with the old links redirected — so anyone still clicking a two-year-old link from Google lands somewhere useful instead of on an error page.
- Google set up properly: a corrected phone number on the Business Profile so the listing, the website and search results finally agree, Google Workspace email for the business, Analytics connected, and the site submitted to Search Console with a sitemap.
- Terms, refund policy and a privacy policy written for New Zealand law, plus a consent step at checkout.
- Error handling that fails gracefully. If something breaks, the customer sees a friendly page with the shop's phone number instead of a dead end, and we get told immediately with enough detail to fix it. Customer details are stripped out before any of it reaches us.
- Instant deployments — every change is live within a couple of minutes, and every version is kept so we can roll back if we ever need to.
The build

The results
What changed
- They own it. The site, the customer orders, the data and the domain are all theirs.
- The owner runs it himself — prices, photos, sold-out labels and opening hours, all editable in a browser.
- Orders arrive at the counter already printed and paid, with the pickup time on the ticket.
- From zero online ordering to a full shop: food paid online, butchery reserved, catering quoted automatically.
